Current Perspectives on Advetising Images of Disability - Beth A. Haller & Sue Ralph pg 293-301

Recap: Disabled people are real people too. Advertisers are finding out that this market branch of society can be a very profitable group. There has been a gross lack of disabled people represented in advertising. Dealing with the stigmatism of a handicapped person being used in advertising was a huge stopping point for advertisers. Now, thanks to companies like Target, disabled people are being used in a large number of ads in various forms of media. Both in the United States and Britain there is a large movement to prevent further discrimination.

Comment: It is nice to see the disabled portrayed as everyday people. One of the places that I have noticed a large amount of disabled people showing up is in children’s programming. Having young children I am exposed to a large number of children shows that are now incorporating the disabled and other ethnicities. I am glad that they are doing this to help further eliminate racial hatred.
