Ling Woo in Historical Context - Chyng Feng Sun, 656-664

Recap: Lucy Liu’s character, Ling Woo, has made the image of Asian females a very different discussion. For the most part of television history, Asian females have been portrayed as the submissive, frail, and quiet “China Doll.” This article talks about how the Asian male has been labeled as “sexually deviant, paradoxically either asexual or as a rape threat top white women.” The article continues to talk about a variety of television shows and movies that portray Asians in a stereotypical ways.

Comment: Our television shows and movies continue to portray Asians in a racist way and will continue until our society learns to accept everyone for who they are. We have started to see that a variety of minorities can get some respect for who they are, but will continue to considered below normal compared to whites.
